The Channel Islands Athletics Club have started strongly in the 2009 national leagues campaign. The men's team finished fourth overall at the British Athletics League Division Four meeting in Pitreavie. Sark's Glenn Etherington won the 110 metres hurdles and Lee Garland finished first in the 3000m steeplechase. The CIAC women's team took fifth place at the opening UK Women's Athletics League Division Four meeting in Stevenage on Sunday. Jersey's Gemma Dawkins was the team's outstanding performer, setting a new personal best of 56.4 seconds in the 400 metres. CIAC coach Andrew Winnie was pleased with both teams after what he described as very respectable performances. He said: "There were a lot of strong results and a few personal bests. These helped notch up some valuable points and it gives us something to build on."
