The Channel Island Athletics Club made a strong debut in the British National Athletics league this weekend. The women finished fourth and the men sixth in the third division of the league at the weekend. Jersey's Sophie Twinam claimed two victories, in the 400m and the high jump for women in Newport. The highlight for the men's team, which was without Dale Garland, Lee Merrien and Jamie Stevenson was a victory in the 4x400m relay. Garland was not taking part as he focuses on preparing for the Olympics in Beijing and top Jersey thrower Stevenson has joined Newham and Essex Beagles. Head coach Andrew Winnie was particularly impressed with the performance of his women's team. Winnie said: "We were in the top four which wasn't so much a surprise but we weren't sure what we were up against. "It was a big step up in class but the girls managed to take that step and there were two or three personal bests so I'm really pleased."
