Sheffield has a proud sporting heritage. Modern football owes a debt to the south Yorkshire city after the world's oldest football club, Sheffield FC, was founded there in 1857. Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground and Sheffield United's Bramall Lane provide homes for the city's passionate blue and red halves. There is also Sheffield's Crucible Theatre, home of the World Snooker Championship, the Don Valley Stadium, capable of holding 25,000 track and field fans, the world-class Ponds Forge swimming and diving venue and ice hockey team the Sheffield Steelers who play at the host venue. |
