Brilliant Murray falls at final hurdle Britain's Andy Murray reached his first Grand Slam final after an epic win over Rafael Nadal in New York. But unfortunately for the Scot, a rejuvenated Roger Federer stood in his way and the Swiss player powered his way to his fifth straight US Open title. Murray, 21, had been hoping to become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win one of the four major singles titles, but he was outclassed. Federer stormed to a 6-2 7-5 6-2 victory in one hour 51 minutes at Flushing Meadows. The Swiss now has 13 Grand Slam titles, one behind record holder Pete Sampras. For Murray, he ended the year as the fourth best player in the world having started the season ninth. |
