Henin-Hardenne was made to fight in the second set |
Top seed Justine Henin-Hardenne won her seventh straight match with a convincing 6-2 6-4 defeat of Monica Seles. Henin-Hardenne is seeking her second successive title following victory over Serena Williams in the final of last week's Family Circle Cup.
The world number four will face Elena Dementieva in the last four on Saturday after the Russian thrashed fourth seed Daniela Hantuchova 6-0 6-1.
Henin-Hardenne cruised through the first set but Seles, a two-time champion at Amelia Island, put up more of a fight in the second.
The veteran American had a chance to break at 3-2 but overhit a backhand off a second serve.
And at 3-3, Seles missed an easy volley on game point and Henin-Hardenne took the opportunity to break.
Seles again could have broken with her opponent serving for the match at 5-4 but the Belgian produced an ace before closing out the match with another ace and a service winner.
Second seed Lindsay Davenport also made smooth progress into the semi-finals with an impressive 6-1 6-1 win over the dangerous Patty Schnyder.
In her three matches this week, Davenport has dropped just five games.
She will face compatriot Jennifer Capriati in the last four, the number three seed comfortably disposing of fellow American Lisa Raymond 6-2 6-0 in the final quarter-final.
Capriati is running into form after struggling with eye problems earlier in the year after having off-season surgery to remove sun spots.
She has advanced to at least the semi-finals in four straight tournaments, although Davenport has won eight of their 10 previous matches.
