Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko overwhelmed world number 43 Amy Frazier to advance into the second round at Amelia Island.
Amy Frazier was knocked out in the first round |
The 19-year-old Vakulenko, who broke both hands last year, won 6-2 6-4 and displayed some of the form that had her close to breaking into the top 100 in the world before her injuries.
The tournament's 1998 champion Mary Pierce withdrew because of a hip injury and a sinus infection.
Pierce strained her right hip in last week's Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina.
She will be replaced in the field by Russian Alina Jidkova.
Frazier was the highest-ranked player to lose Monday.
Among those to progress past the first round were Russia's Vera Zvonareva, Australia's Nicole Pratt and American Jill Craybas.
