| Malhub springs Jubilee surprise Malhub won by a length-and-a-half Malhub made virtually all the running as he caused a major surprise by winning the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot on Saturday. Johannesburg started as favourite, but he was beaten a long way out and eventually finished with only three horses behind him. Runner-up Danehurst launched a late challenge but could not get closer than a length-and-a-half behind the winner. Three Points, who finished second last year, was up with the winner for most of the race before weakening late on to finish third.
Malhub, ridden by Kevin Darley, was returned at 16-1. "The way the race panned out suited him," said Darley, who only got the ride after two other jockeys opted to ride different horses. "When I picked him up he found a length and he's done it nice." Running in the third colours of owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, Malhub was stepping up markedly in class. His last outing saw him break the track record in a four-runner affair at Yarmouth, which convinced trainer John Gosden of his potential. "He's had problems with his breathing in the past and he had an operation over the winter," said Gosden. "I felt a mile was too far for him so we thought we should give him one really smart entry, so we put him in three months ago but he took time to come to himself. Retirement looming "He broke the track record at Yarmouth which showed he was a serious horse." Aidan O'Brien had expressed fears about last year's champion juvenile Johannesburg before the race and his doubts proved right. The Ballydoyle trainer admitted after the race that the colt may never be seen on a racecourse again. "We'll take him home and see how he is and if he ever has a chance of making it back to where he used to be. "I'm being realistic. When you bottom a horse like him, it's hard to get him back. "It's very possible he won't run again. Why would you ask him to go and do that again when he's just not the horse he was last year?" Golden Jubilee Stakes: 1 Malhub (K Darley) 16-1 |
