| Rock wins easily at Ascot Mick Kinane and Sir Alex Ferguson enjoy the victory Sir Alex Ferguson's Rock of Gibraltar lived up to his favourite status as he cruised to victory in the St James' Palace Stakes, the feature race on the first day of Royal Ascot. Rock of Gibraltar was making it five Group One wins in a row, watched by a record crowd for the meeting's opening day of more than 51,000. Sir Alex's horse settled second from last at the start, with Sahara Desert taking them out for the first half of the race. Dupont took a share of the lead at halfway and edged in front as they entered the final couple of furlongs, but Rock of Gibraltar was making steady progress. Once he hit the front approaching the final furlong, there was only one winner and Aidan O'Brien had the first two as Landseer followed Mick Kinane's horse home, with Aramram a distant third.
A stewards' inquiry was called - with the winner not affected - but the placings remained unaltered. Despite going off as a 4-5 favourite Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that he was not convinced Rock of Gibraltar, who has also won both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas, would win. "I can't say I was apprehensive today, more hopeful because it was a good field," he said. "And I think the Guineas form has held up so I'm very, very pleased. "What it shows you is that he can travel in any ground and that's important - soft ground, good ground or good to firm as it was in the Gimcrack - that and his determination." Great release Ferguson also confirmed that he will retain a share in the colt when he eventually goes to stud. "It's a great release for me and it can't get better than five Group Ones in a row," he added. Winning jockey Mick Kinane joined in the tributes to the horse. "He's very dependable. You can set your watch by him," said Kinane. O'Brien and Kinane were celebrating on the double when Statue of Liberty took the following race, the Coventry Stakes. Kinane opted for the son of Storm Cat over fellow Ballydoyle competitor Sparticus and his decision proved to be the right one as he held off Pakhoes to win by a neck. Statue Of Liberty is already quoted at 20-1 by Paddy Power for next year's 2000 Guineas.
"He always seemed very good at home with a lot of class," O'Brien said. "He's just a baby but he's a beautiful horse. "The ground has been very soft at home so we thought we'd find a race for him first time to get him right and it went well but he still has a lot to learn. Martin Dwyer joined Kinane on two winners after the first day. First, he won the King's Stand Stakes on the 16-1 shot Dominica and followed that up with victory on 14-1 chance Zargus in the final race of the day, the Balmoral Handicap. |
