Beijing organisers decided to stage the equestrian events in Hong Kong because they were uncertain they would be able to create an equine disease-free zone on the mainland.
The three-day event will be spilt between two venues; dressage and show jumping will take place at the Sha Tin Racecourse, while the cross country will take place at the Beas River venue (pictured).
The Hong Kong Jockey Club has invested 50m to renovate existing venues and build new facilities.
This will also include giant cooling fans to ensure horses do not suffer from heat and humidity problems.
