An error of judgement saw Schumacher's hopes of catching championship leader Alonso suffer a major blow in Monaco.

The German had clocked the fastest time in qualifying but was stripped of pole and demoted to last on the grid after stewards adjudged him to have deliberately parked his car to hinder his rivals.

Schumacher eventually finished fifth in Sunday's race as Alonso stretched his lead to 21 points with his fourth win of the season.
