Leonard makes his return to the Ryder Cup, nine years after he helped secure the last US victory in the event.
His 45-foot putt secured America's memorable come-from-behind victory at Brookline and also sparked celebrations that anyone connected with the competition would sooner forget.
Leonard was only 25 when he won the Open at Troon in 1997, firing a final-day 65 to win from five shots behind.
He was tipped for bigger things, especially after winning The Players Championship the following year, but despite going close on several occasions he has failed to add another major title.
After a miserable 2006 he started last year with six missed cuts and slipped out of the top 200 in the world.
But a return to his coaching mentor Randy Smith has seen him rediscover his form. He has only missed one cut this year and won his 12th career tournament in June.
Despite those heroics in earning a half with Jose Maria Olazabal in 1999, Leonard is yet to win a game in the Ryder Cup but he has enjoyed some success in four Presidents Cup appearances.
