Jim Furyk
Age: 38
Caps: 5 (1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006)
Ryder Cup record: W6 L12 H2
A straight-shooter despite an unorthodox, loopy swing, Furyk is also a gifted putter, who captured his first and only major at the 2003 US Open.
A veteran of five Presidents Cups, he dovetails effectively with any partner in team golf, though his Ryder Cup record does not reflect that, with 12 defeats in 20 matches.
With Tiger Woods absent, the Americans will be looking for leadership from the likes of the quietly-spoken Furyk and Phil Mickelson.
He appears to be in good form following his tied-fifth placing in the Open at Royal Birkdale.
A talented all-around sportsman, Furyk was equally at home on the basketball court as the golf course while at school.
After appearing on three consecutive losing Ryder Cup sides, he will be desperate for a better result this time.
As he said after missing out on the 2007 US Open title by one shot to Angel Cabrera, "second is not much fun, to be honest".
