Surrey mascot Roary proved he was a 'cheetah' rather than a Lion in the special race at the Twenty20 finals. Lanky the Lancashire giraffe was promoted to first place |
He thought he was the mane man when he crossed the line in first place after negotiating inflatable fences and a ball pool in the mascot derby at Edgbaston. But Roary was subsequently disqualified.
He was found to have swapped his mascot footwear and baggy trousers for proper spikes and tracksuit bottoms which race organisers deemed was an unfair advantage.
So Lanky, the Lancashire giraffe, was promoted and officially won the race by a long neck.
An ECB statement said: "Roary weighed in with his mascot shoes and baggy trousers but discarded them before the race which was not fair to the other mascots."
It was some consolation for Lancashire after they had been beaten by one run by Surrey in the semi-final.
But it was a double blow for the Lions as they also lost in the final to Leicestershire.
