Surrey have advanced to their second Twenty20 final after beating Lancashire by one run in the semi-final at Edgbaston on Saturday.

Lancashire bowled themselves into contention, dismissing Surrey for their lowest-ever Twenty20 total of 133, but choked to end on 132-8.

In an exciting finale, Lancashire needed seven runs from the last over to win but managed just five.

Spinners on both sides did the damage, taking eight wickets in the match.

Lancashire's Gary Keedy and Dinesh Mongia ran through Surrey taking three wickets each.

Keedy took 3-25, including two in the same over as he dismissed Rikki Clarke for 18 and bowled Mark Ramprakash (24).And Dinesh Mongia took the prized wicket of Adam Hollioake for one and Jonathan Batty for two to end with 2-5.

Surrey had got off to a flyer, particularly punishing Glenn Chapple with 28 runs off his two overs, before James Anderson bowled James Benning for 16.

An 87mph delivery from Flintoff did for Ali Brown as he was bowled through the gate for 32 and then a superb catch by Mongia in the deep disposed of Scott Newman for 12.

But it was the spin of Keedy, Mongia and Carl Hooper which turned the game in Lancashire's favour.

Surrey, who had never lost a game in the competition, slumped from 76-3 to 113-6 with three wickets falling in six balls.

And two excellent pieces of fielding from Mark Chilton, a catch at long-off to rid of Azhar Mahmood, and a direct hit from 50 yards to dismiss Phil Sampson for a duck, further dented Surrey's progression.

But they went about defending a modest total in great fashion, dismissing danger-man Andrew Flintoff for 15.

Lancashire lost wickets on a regular basis and Nayan Doshi's two wickets in an over turned the game, when he dismissed Dinesh Mongia and Carl Hooper to end with 2-27.

Dominic Cork looked to have swung it back towards Lancashire with 25 off 13 balls including sixes off Doshi and Adam Hollioake.

But his departure set up a thrilling finale and it was paceman Azhar Mahmood whose cleverly bowled final over saw Surrey maintain their unbeaten record in the competition.
