Northampton chairman David Cardoza backs Ian Sampson

Cardoza is targeting an early return to League One for the Cobblers

Northampton Town chairman David Cardoza has backed manager Ian Sampson to stay in the job even if his team does not gain promotion this season.

Sampson replaced the sacked Stuart Gray in charge at Sixfields last September and has a contract with the Cobblers until the end of the current campaign.

"He's doing a good job and I'm sure he'll be here longer than that," Cardoza told BBC Radio Northampton.

"We're certainly on a good run at the moment," he added.

Northampton are unbeaten in their last eight matches and currently occupy 12th in the League Two table.

"That's not great but I'm taking nothing away from Ian when you think where we were - in 20th place just a few weeks ago," continued Cardoza.

"I want to get us back into League One and I want Sammo to do that.

"But if he doesn't it doesn't mean he hasn't got the job.

"I'm pretty confident he'll be with us next season, the way things are going. I have every faith in him."

The Cobblers will look to extend their undefeated run to nine games when they entertain Burton Albion on Saturday (1500 GMT).
