St Mary's win keeps up pressure

Football

The top two in the Sure Mobile Premier League both won on Saturday, but it was St Mary's who grabbed the attention.

Steve Priestnal scored the only goal of the game as Saints beat Laxey 1-0 at Glen Road to maintain their title push.

The win keeps St Mary's in third place, just five points off the summit with two games in hand over leaders Peel.

Peel kept up their electrifying form with a 5-0 win against newly-promoted Michael in the western derby, led by a hat-trick from Keirron Christian.

Callum Gallagher and Johnny Myers were also on target for the table-toppers.

St George's stay second after a 5-2 home win against Ayre at Glencrutchery Road.

The northerners battled well, and at half-time the sides were tied at 2-2 but the Geordies proved too strong in the second half.

Chris Bass junior scored a impressive hat-trick with Sean Quaye and Lee Bass netting the other goals for the home side.

Phil Quayle and Martin Torr netted for Ayre.

In the southern derby, an Aaron Hawley hat-trick fired Rushen to a 5-0 win over Colby.

Paul Jones and Andrew Moody were also on target at Croit Lowey.

Old Boys won a close contest at Ballacloan against Ramsey but the match was marred by a broken leg sustained by the victors' John Quirk.

On the pitch, first-half goals from Sean Gavin and Tommy Miller gave Old Boys a 2-0 lead and, although Danny Foulis pulled one back for the home side after the break, Old Boys took the points.

Elsewhere Gymns' bid to beat the drop gathered further momentum with a 4-0 home win against Union Mills.

Two goals in each half did the damage with David Rees, Roger Davies, Ciaran McNulty and Mark Connor the scorers.
