Clare Taylor, the longest-serving member of the England Women's team, gives the lowdown on the squad to play South Africa. Clare Connor |
Clare Connor (captain)
Born: 1.9.76
County Sussex "Connie is growing in confidence and tactical awareness with every series. She always leads by example - a good person to have around.
With the ball, you can guarantee 10 good, tight overs and two or three wickets. She's not afraid to put herself on at times when we actually need her. She doesn't shy away from the responsibility."
Charlotte Edwards
Born: 17.12.79
County: Kent
"She's returning to a bit of the explosive [batting] form of a few years ago when she first hit the international stage.
"She's had injuries but she's come back well from those - she's back to the Lottie of old and I think the role of vice-captain is helping her mature as a cricketer as well."
Rosalie Birch
Born: 6.12.83
County:Sussex
"Rosalie has come from nowhere - she was on the under-19 tour to Australia and obviously had a good tour out there.
"She had a very consistent Super Fours tournament, so let's give her a go and see what happens."
Lydia Greenway
Born: 6.8.85
County: Kent
"Lydia came out to Australia with us and had a really good Test series. She stood up to Fitzy [Cathryn Fitzpatrick], got knocked down by her and got straight back up and said 'Come on, next one then'.
"She's shown she's got bottle for a fight and she's another one who did well in Super Fours and it's a case of throw the youngsters in at the deep end, see what they're made of."
 Isa Guha |
Isa Guha
Born: 21.5.85
County: Berkshire "Isa is a star - she burst on the scene last year and took her chance with both hands. We know what she can do bowling, we just need to get a bit more out of her batting-wise.
"She's a great kid, great to have around - always lively and bubbly. You need characters like that and if they're good at cricket as well, that's a bit of a bonus."
Hannah Lloyd
Born: 25.8.79
County: Somerset
"I'm pleased for Hannah because she's been there or thereabouts, been in and out of the squad.
"She put a good run of performances together in the Super Fours and the selectors have stood by their word that anyone who does something special in Super Fours will be in."
Beth Morgan
Born: Born 27.9.81
County: Middlesex
"Beth came into the reckoning just prior to the last World Cup and just seemed to lose her form, she was only 16 or 17 at the time.
"She's come on in leaps and bounds. She's a great asset with bat and ball, and she's a good fielder as well."
 Laura Newton |
Laura Newton
Born: 27.11.77
County: Lancashire "Laura has promised quite a bit for quite a while but apart from the 98 [against India] last summer still hasn't quite delivered the goods.
"She's a class cricketer, smooth bowling action, great batter who hits it hard. It's just a case of transferring her from from the nets or county cricket to hard facts and figures on the international scene."
Lucy Pearson
Born: 19.2.72
County: Staffordshire
"She's now the complete opening bowler. She worked hard over the winter with John [Harmer] - hopefully she's got her injuries behind her - and we're now seeing the best of Lucy.
"Now she's got that confidence and knows what she can actually do, I think she'll go from strength to strength. I think you'll see her get a lot of wickets this summer."
 Jane Cassar |
Jane Smit
Born: 24.12.72
County: Notts "Jane's keeping really well, but I don't think her keeping has ever been in doubt - she just had a couple of years where her batting was failing her a little bit.
"She's gone away and worked on that, got herself a bit fitter perhaps, so it's good to see her back."
Laura Spragg
Born: 16.6.82
County: Yorkshire
"Spraggy is the joker in the pack but she's worked really hard - her bowling is a lot more consistent now.
"On her day, she can be a good all-rounder, but she's struggling a bit with the bat at the moment. She took a year out from her University (Centre of Cricket Excellence], but she's going back this time."
 Claire Taylor |
Claire Taylor
Born: 25.9.75
County: Berkshire "Tails sets very high standards for herself and we were a bit surprised the way she got herself out and the lack of runs from her in Australia.
"She'll have gone away and got herself some different game plans and hopefully she'll be back firing on all cylinders. We do need that in mid-order. If she gets one good score, that'll be it."
Helen Wardlaw
Born: 11.10.82
County: Yorkshire
"Wardy went to India in 2000-01 and didn't really live up to her potential. She now realises it takes a bit more hard work to play for England and stay there.
"She's a genuine off-spinner, but she seems to get a bit more lift than anyone else. It doesn't come on to the bat and you end up playing the ball off your hip. I think that's her greatest asset."
And what about Clare herself?
Clare Taylor
Born: 22.5.65
County: Yorkshire
"It's good to see so many young kids coming through. But my motto has always been if they want my place, they'll have to take it, because I'm not going to give it up.
"There's life in the old dog yet. I'll keep going until a) I'm not required or b) I just can't physically do it any more."
