 | The plan today was to get an early wicket and try and get through them - and that's what happened |
Michael Vaughan paid tribute to the tireless efforts of Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard after England defeated Bangladesh in the first Test. The pace pair shared 16 wickets between them in stamina-sapping conditions to help the team to a seven-wicket win.
"I thought they bowled extremely well on that kind of wicket. We put the hard work in yesterday and we got our rewards today," said captain Vaughan.
"We're happy with the performance and delighted to go 1-0 up."
Harmison's overall figures of 9-79 earned him the Man of the Match award, and he responded positively to the extra responsibility of leading England's attack.
"Everything's gone well for me on the trip so far," he said.
"Matthew Hoggard deserves a special mention, he bowled really well in this game. We bowled together and I think that was a good thing from the England point of view.
"It was difficult on the fourth day, they batted really well but we stuck to the task and have come out worthy winners."
Mahmud was dreaming of victory on the fourth evening |
Vaughan also singled out the first-innings century by Marcus Trescothick and Graham Thorpe's 64 as contributing factors to England's win.
"Tres is playing extremely well at the minute.Thorpey has come back in and played the same way he has for a number of years."
He added: "On days three and four I thought Bangladesh were excellent.
"It was a good Test victory. Five days of hard work - now we have to build on what we have done here, go to Chittagong and try to go 2-0 up."
Bangladesh captain Khaled Mahmud was left to lament the latest Test loss which took his side's overall record to one draw and 25 defeats.
'I think the problem was that we didn't score enough runs in the first innings due to the rain and losing a few early wickets," he said.
But the skipper was quick to praise his team for putting up a fight after looking down and out in the early part of England's first innings.
"England were 111-0 after the second day, but our bowlers came back and bowled a disciplined line and length.
"When we finished day four I thought we had a definite chance because we had four wickets in hand and were 150 runs ahead, but we lost early wickets again.
"But definitely we are playing well and good cricket, so hopefully we can do much better in the Chittagong Test."
The second Test begins on Wednesday.
