1st Test, Dhaka: Bangladesh v England Steve Harmison gave England the upper hand on a first day reduced to just 15 overs by a torrential downpour. A 30-minute deluge after four overs had been bowled stopped play for more than six hours.
Work on the outfield allowed 11 overs before stumps as the hosts reached 24-2, with Hannan Sarkar (18) and Rajin Saleh (0) the not out batsmen.
Harmison (2-9) was the wicket-taker, removing opener Javed Omar for three and Habibul Bashar for two.
Mark Butcher (throat infection) was earlier passed fit by England, who handed debuts to Rikki Clarke and Gareth Batty.
Worcestershire off-spinner Batty forms one half of a two-pronged spin attack alongside Ashley Giles, leaving England with just two frontline seamers - Harmison and Matthew Hoggard.
The hosts included two left-arm spinners, Mohammad Rafique and debutant Enamul Haque jnr.
Ground workers did a great job to get the outfield back in playing order |
Bangladesh took 21 balls to get off the mark after winning the toss, and no sooner had Omar scored the first run in Tests between the two sides than the heavens opened.
The long wait was worth it for England fans, and Harmison deserved his double breakthrough after bowling with great variation.
Mixing swing and threatening bounce, Harmison kept the home batsmen in two minds at the crease.
Sarkar delighted the home crowd with the first boundary of the match off Hoggard shortly after the resumption, but their jubilation was short-lived.
Omar, who had chased Harmison outside off-stump to no effect more than once, was tied up in knots by a short ball which he fended to Clarke at gully.
Habibul Bashar came and went in an insipid cameo, flashing wildly at the Durham paceman with no footwork and edging to Marcus Trescothick at first slip.
At the other end, a composed Sarkar looked comfortable against both pacemen, and Hoggard in particular.
He was unlucky not to collect a second boundary when driving Hoggard through the covers late in the day, but in this form more will be in the offing on day two - weather permitting.
Umpires plan to make up for lost time by starting play 30 minutes early from now on and accounting for 105 overs to be bowled each day, instead of the regular 90.
