York's Wilson hits double century

YPL Trophy

Opener Dan Wilson scored 201 not out against Rotherham at Clifton Park to keep up York's challenge for the Yorkshire Premier League title.

Colleague Duncan Snell made 103 as York piled up 363-2 declared with four overs to go, giving them more time to dismiss Rotherham, which they did for 228.

"He was exceptional," said all-rounder Nick Kay of Wilson's double ton.

"It was a joy to watch, the ball went everywhere, he looked like he was in the form of his life."

The YPL record is 231, so Wilson might have overhauled that total had York not declared.

"He probably could have got past that 231 if we'd batted the extra four overs," Kay added. "But you just don't know if it would have made a difference at the end."

For the record, York almost needed the extra four overs to dismiss Rotherham and claim the extra two points, so it proved a good declaration by skipper Marcus Wood.

York stay third in the table, three points behind leaders Yorkshire Academy and one behind Scarborough, who took six points from a home win over Barnsley.

Scarborough's Adam Lyth scored 127 not out, some of the runs in partnership with his elder brother Ashley who made 26 not out, as they overhauled Barnsley's 207-7 to win by eight wickets.

Harrogate's inconsistent form took another dive as they lost at home to Appleby Frodingham by seven wickets.

Harrogate posted 217-5 with Nick Lindley scoring 44. The Scunthorpe side replied with 218-3.

On Sunday York reached the semi-finals of the Black Sheep Trophy by beating Bradford side Girlington on a higher run rate.

York made 220-7 in the 33 overs the weather allowed. Rain restricted Girlington to 138-8 in 29 overs, so York won by 61 runs.

York now entertain Honley, the team that beat them in last year's final.
