Inzamam's farewell appearance began emotionally, with the South African players forming a guard of honour for him in Lahore.
Alas there was to be no grand finale on the pitch as Inzamam managed only 14 in the first innings and then was dismissed for three second time around.
It meant he finished agonisingly short - three runs - of becoming his country's leading Test run-scorer.
But he still ended with an impressive tally of 8,830 runs and 25 centuries in 120 Tests, in addition to 11,739 runs in one-day internationals, ensuring his place in history as one of the greatest batsmen to grace the game.
