If a star was born in the 1992 World Cup, it was most certainly on the wane at the next three editions of the tournament.
Inzamam failed in the 1996 quarter-final against India in Bangalore and the one-sided 1999 final against Australia at Lord's.
But that paled by comparison with the nightmare he endured in 2003 in South Africa, when he could only muster a paltry 19 runs in six matches during a disastrous tournament for his country.
He later called it "the worst phase of my career" and was one of a host of star names to be dropped in the aftermath as the selectors bowed to public clamour.
