He missed the Champions Trophy, which his team exited at the group stage, but was back to oversee a Test series win over West Indies.
However in those games and on the difficult tour of South Africa, it was clear his powers were on the wane and his place in the team was being debated more than at any point in his career.
That was especially so in the one-day team where his tactics, often perceived as negative, were increasingly being criticised. And matters soon came to a head.
