India hold upper hand
First Test, Multan, day three (stumps):
Pakistan 364-6 v India 675-5 dec

Irfan Patah celebrates a wicket

India gained the advantage on day three of the first Test, after reducing Pakistan to 364-6.

Moin Khan fell to the final ball of the day with the home side still 112 short of avoiding the follow-on.

Abdul Razzaq was left 47 not out, with tailender Mohammad Sami due to join him in the morning.

A 160-run stand between captain Inzamam-ul-Haq (77) and Yasir Hameed (91) provided the bulk of the runs, while Irfan Pathan took two wickets.

India's bowlers were generally controlled, but aside from some swing with the second new ball there was little help from a pancake-flat pitch and clear conditions.

Resuming on 42-0, Pakistan's openers made cautious progress during the morning.

And it took a change in the bowling to bring results, Pathan having Taufeeq Umar caught at slip via an edge for 23.

Imran Farhat had faced 83 balls got his 38 when, five overs later, Lakshmipathy Balaji got a delivery to swing in and trap him in line with middle stump.

Stand-in India captain Rahul Dravid could have capitalised by keeping fielders in and experimenting with bowlers. Instead he allowed the fourth wicket pair to settle.

Yasir Hameed
Yasir Hameed made 91 in a strong partnership with Inzamam
Inzamam was especially fluent, using delicate pushes and flicks to find gaps in the field on his home ground.

Hammeed was also afforded the time to place neatly, although he rode his luck with the occasional thick edge.

It took an error from umpire Simon Taufel to end their stand at 160.

On 77, Inzamam was adjudged caught off Anil Kumble at short leg when replays showed the ball come off his pad.

Pathan's ability to swing away late was finally rewarded as Hameed edged behind nine short of what would have been his third Test century.

This pitch does not suit us and I hope the wickets in the remaining two Tests will be different
Inzamam-ul-Haq
It was only a matter of time before the fifth wicket fell as both Razzaq and Yousuf Youhana struggled against the new ball.

The lot fell to Youhana, who got a thin edge down leg side as he looked to flick Zaheer Khan through midwicket.

Razzaq survived a sharp chance at short leg on 39 and increased the tempo as conditions again began to favour the batsmen.

But Sachin Tendulkar's introduction into the attack threw them back into confusion.

And Moin was made to look foolish when he was bowled between his legs by a Tendulkar googly just as stumps were about to be drawn.
