A bitter pill to swallow
By Craig Wright
Scotland cricket captain

To lose the Six Nations Challenge on run rate was a bitter blow.

We were aware of what was going on in the Holland versus UAE match and knew if we won and they lost we would win the tournament and qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy.

But the stark fact is we didn't really play consistently well enough in the tournament and didn't make enough runs.

We had the US under control at 30-3 but we just didn't take it on from there and we can't blame anyone else but ourselves.

We knew right up until the end that potentially Holland were going to lose and if our game lasted long enough then we could win the tournament on run rate.

But after the game finished it took a good hour and some frantic calculations to work out who had won and the we realised we had missed out by 0.02 on run rate.

It was horrendous when we realised we had not won and the mood in the dressing room was very subdued.

We let ourselves down against Holland and the United States. If we had been on top of our game I believe we could have won all five matches in the tournament.

There is a small crumb of comfort to know we beat Namibia and Canada, who played in last year's World Cup.

I am trying not to think of the $100,000 prize money we would have won

The US only had one player in the squad who was actually born in the States, the others were mainly West Indies ex-patriates.

But I'm not going to use that as an excuse as the rules are the rules - I'll leave it to others to make of it what they will.

I am trying not to think of the $100,000 prize money we would have won - or the fact we would have made a date with world champions Australia in the Champions Trophy in September.

It is a blow but we have got to pick ourselves up and look forward to the National Cricket League season and the World Cup qualifiers next year and make sure we don't slip up there.

We are progressing and we have shown in this tournament we are at least as good as the rest of the them.

With a little bit of good luck we could have won it so we know we are there or there abouts.

We just have to progress a little bit further and make sure we are winning these tournaments instead of finishing runners-up.

It was nice to see the Saltires fans who had made the journey to Dubai and I feel sorry that we did not win it for them.
