Fans' corner
Zimbabwe fan Ashley Veremu

BBC Sport has teamed up with fans on the TMS message boards to give you a fan's eye view of international cricket.

Each week, we will be choosing one supporter to sound off about his or her team.

This week Ashley Veremu, 23, who lives in Harare, gives his views on Zimbabwe.

Who have been your best players in the last year?
Mark Vermeulen, Tatenda Taibu and Heath Streak.

And your worst?
Dion Ebrahim

Sum up the last year in one word:
Encouraging

Tatenda Taibu has been the pick of Zimbabwe's players on several occasions in 2003
Wicket-keeper Tatenda Taibu is one of Zimbabwe's leading talents

Now sum it up in 50:
Even though we have lost most of our matches the team has shown that they are rebuilding. As a young team the results they have managed to get really show that they are putting their all into the Zimbabwe colours! Now that's encouraging.

Which Zimbabwean ground is your favourite to watch international cricket at and why?
Well it has to be the Harare Sports Club with the 'Keg n Meg'! There's also a great view and a good batting wicket that guarantees lots of runs.

Are there any promising youngsters in your squad?
Sean Ervine, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Mark Vermeulen, Barney Rogers

Player your team couldn't cope without?
Heath Streak

Which opposition players do your fans most respect?
Matthew Hayden, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar and Muttiah Muralitharan.

If you could choose one of these to play for Zimbabwe, which would it be?
Definitely Muralitharan!

Best moment as a Zimbabwean fan:
Beating India in World Cup '99.

Zimbabwe enjoy one of their greatest successes as they beat India in the 1999 World Cup in England
Another wicket falls as Zimbabwe beat India in the 1999 World Cup

Biggest let down:
Snatching defeats from the jaws of victory in the recent VB Series and coming back without a win.

Funniest thing seen at a match:
Umpire Billy Bowden, now he is funny!

Favourite all-time player:
Andy Flower

Worst player even seen:
Mpomie Mbangwa

Should England tour Zimbabwe?
No doubt, a big yes!

What impact has the retirement of stars like Henry Olonga and Andy Flower had on the team's fortunes?
Well they kind of left us at a time when the team was in the deep end and really needed their maturity and experience. Most of us thought it spelt doom for Zimbabwean cricket.

Their retirements caused shockwaves as fans panicked, we had not anticipated this. But the way the youngsters have handled the pressure and performed shows that the world has yet to see what we are really made of.

Credit must go to the ZCU and the CFX Academy for grooming these talented players. Heath Streak has also been inspirational both to the players and to us the fans.

Are Zimbabwe in any danger of becoming Bangladesh's first Test victims in this month's series?
No! We might lose to the big boys but that doesn't mean if you come to our backyard you are going to have it your way.

Bangladesh are a new side, we wish them well but if they are thinking of a first Test win on our patch then they better play better than the top teams in the world!

Nonetheless, we as fans always hope for a competitive series and not a one-sided event. We hope they will be competitive but beatable!

What does the ZCU need to do to get the side into the world's top five teams?
Well so far they have done almost everything that I think would take us to the top five: they have groomed talent still in its infancy, expanded the cricket to almost all parts of Zimbabwe and the game is now being played in nearly all junior schools.

Now what's left for them to do is to build several academies across the country so as to have access to all the raw talent in Zimbabwe and finally recruit players purely on merit and not on past reputations.
