First Test, Brisbane, day four (stumps)
India 362-6; Australia 323
Captain Sourav Ganguly scored a fine century to take India to 362-6 in their first innings on the fourth day of the first Test with Australia. Ganguly made 144 and VVS Laxman 75 as India recovered from the loss of three wickets for one run in a tough morning session at the Gabba.
Their 146-run partnership for the fifth wicket put the Aussies, who made just 323, firmly on the back foot.
But after so much rain the match will almost certainly finish in a draw.
Jason Gillespie was lucky to see the end of Sachin Tendulkar |
The day began with India 11-0 and Virender Sehwag immediately opened his shoulders in typical fashion to hit 45 off 51 balls. Nathan Bracken, who saw the right-hander dropped on 16 by Damien Martyn, had revenge when Matthew Hayden accepted a chance in the slips off the same bowler.
A score at that point of 61-1 became 62-3 when Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar fell in the same Jason Gillespie over.
Dravid was again held by Hayden in the slips to be dismissed for one while Tendulkar departed for a duck after receiving a rough lbw verdict from umpire Steve Bucknor.
The delivery appeared to be passing too high to hit the stumps.
Inexperienced opener Akash Chopra was still there and he settled in to help Ganguly add a crucial 65 for the fourth wicket before also falling to a Hayden slip catch off Gillespie.
Laxman entered the fray shortly after lunch and hit 11 boundaries in a stirring partnership with Ganguly that lasted more than two hours.
He finally fell to a catch at backward point off Stuart MacGill.
The leg-spinner also removed Ganguly before the close, leaving young wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel still there on 37 not out.
Ganguly's ton was his first against Australia in his 69-Test career.
Gillespie impressed with overall figures of 3-45 from 25 overs while Andy Bichel suffered a torrid day, and was hit for 118 in 23 overs.
