Australia fall apart
First Test, Brisbane, day two
Australia 323-9 (stumps) v India

India are jubilant after a good, if short, day's work
Australia suffered a dramatic collapse as a resurgent India reduced them to 323-9 on a rain-hit day in Brisbane.

Zaheer Khan returned 5-95 as the hosts lost 7-49 in a 16-over period played over seven hours.

Resuming on 262-2 after the start was delayed by two hours, Australia slumped to 275-5 at lunch.

Another lengthy interruption failed to dampen India's momentum, and they quicky cut into the tail before bad light stopped play early.

Day one hero Justin Langer was the first to go when lbw to Ajit Agarkar for 121, before Damien Martyn was run out after a hideous mix-up with skipper Steve Waugh.

The game is definitely evenly poised at this stage; I'm confident our batters will do a good job

Waugh made a bad call for a third run which was never on and Martyn was on his way for 42.

Things got worse for Australia when Waugh was out for nought treading on his own wicket playing a short ball from Zaheer.

Waugh, playing his last Test at the Gabba, hit the ball to the fine leg boundary but the Indians saw the off bail dislodged and appealed.

It was the first time in 165 Tests Waugh has been removed this way, though against the same team at Chennai in 2001 he did manage another unusual dismissal, handling the ball.

Just one run had been added after play resumed well into the evening when Adam Glichrist was caught in slip by VVS Laxman off Zaheer.

And the pair combined three overs later to remove Andy Bichel for 11, giving Zaheer his third five-wicket haul in Tests.

Simon Katich was then caught behind off the left-arm paceman, and Australia's capitulation reached new levels of folly next over when Jason Gillespie was run-out attempting a suicidal fourth run.

Bad light soon put a stop to proceedings, much to the disappointment of the fired-up Indians.
