Second one-day international, Lahore
Pakistan v New Zealand
Sami's pace was far too hot for the Kiwi tail to contend with |
Mohammad Sami took a stunning four wickets in one over as New Zealand's fledgling side were sent packing in the second one-day international. Pakistan won the match by 124 runs to take a 2-0 series lead.
The result puts them third in the one-day rankings - enough to put them in the same group as arch-rivals India in the ICC Champions Trophy.
Sami finished with figures of 5-10. His seventh over provided sensational viewing for the Lahore public.
Jacob Oram and Tama Canning were both beaten for pace and bowled off the first two balls of the over.
Daniel Vettori saw off two dot balls before hoisting a catch to gully and for the last ball of the over Paul Hitchock's middle stump was uprooted.
In Sami's next over, Brendon McCullum fell in identical fashion off the fifth delivery and the match was all over.
In all, New Zealand had lost their last six wickets in 18 deliveries for just two runs.
Elahi fell in the penultimate over of Pakistan's innings |
Earlier, Saleem Elahi, only playing because captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was laid low with a throat infection, top-scored with 70 in Pakistan's formidable 281-6.
But the most telling contribution came from Abdul Razzaq, who blasted 42 not out off only 16 balls at the death.
Pakistan won the toss and openers Imran Farhat (68) and Yasir Hameed (53) put on 115 in 24 overs.
Kiwi off-spinner Daniel Vettori then removed both men in an impressive spell which yielded him 3-44.
After a middle order stutter reduced the score to 171-4, Elahi and Shoaib Malik put on 50 in quick time, setting the stage for an outstanding performance from Razzaq at the death.
Of Razzaq's runs, 27 of them came up in the last two overs of the innings bowled by Daryl Tuffey (1-62) and Hitchcock (1-54).
New Zealand were reduced to 51-3 early on as Shabbir Ahmed struck form with the ball. They recovered through a 68-run partnership between Chris Cairns and Richard Jones but the run rate was rising rapidly by the time Cairns was run out for 29.
