Julian Golding's victory in the 200 metres showed what a big talent he is.
He is one of the nice guys of the sport but has gone through so much over the past few years with illness and injury and was written off by many people.
Julian Golding has had problems over the past couple of years |
He ran very well to beat Christian and with Darren Campbell finishing third, I think it will be very difficult for the selectors not to pick the top three for the World Championship.
We now have real talent in the 200m for Paris and all three have the potential to reach the final and maybe pick up some medals.
Danny Caines ran well in the 400m but I still think he needs to find maybe about half a second more before Paris if he is to make an impact there.
But there were also good runs from Ian Mackie, who is just getting to grips with the event, as well as Du'aine Ladejo who brought back some memories with his second place.
In a weekend where there were not too many outstanding performances, it was good to see a new name emerge in the 800m with Ricky Soos winning.
Carl Myerscough was way ahead of the field in the shot |
We have been waiting for another middle-distance talent and he ran a very controlled race and is improving all the time.
Although he hasn't achieved the qualifying time, I would like the selectors to think about taking him to the Paris for the experience.
Carl Myerscough in the shot was another who looked impressive and goes into Paris as a genuine medal prospect while there was another world class performance from Yamile Aldama in the triple jump.
She has been jumping superbly but we still don't know when or if she will be able to compete for Great Britain.
If, as has been reported, Birmingham are wondering whether to renew its contract for the AAA Championship, there are plenty of other tracks which would step in.
I am less concerned by the absence of the big names than the poor depth of some of the fields.
We only had 17 entries in the men's 200m and just three women in the 5000m and that is something which needs to be addressed.
