Chambers takes sprint glory
Dwain Chambers
Chambers was an emphatic winner

Dwain Chambers booked his place in the 100m at the World Championships in Paris after victory in Saturday's Norwich Union trials in Birmingham.

The defending AAA champion ran a blistering 10.08 seconds, pulling away in the closing stages for a comfortable win.

Darren Campbell finished a surprise second to Chambers but his time of 10.19 is still outside the qualifying standard with youngster Mark Lewis-Francis in third and waiting on his ticket for Paris.

"I'm just glad it's over, now I can sleep well and breathe easy at night," Chambers said.

Joice Maduaka was well ahead of her rivals in the women's 100m final, in 11.31 seconds but the 29-year-old is also waiting for the qualifying time for Paris.

There was drama in the final of the women's 400m where the favourite, last year's Commonwealth silver and European bronze medallist Lee McConnell was forced to withdraw with a hamstring problem.

In her absence, European Under 23 champion Helen Karagounis put in a superb run to take the AAA title and claim a second notable win in the space of a week.

In the men's event, Daniel Caines led the qualifiers for Sunday's final, winning his semi-final in a time of 45.75 seconds but Jamie Baulch missed out after he could only finish fifth in the other semi-final.

400m hurdler Chris Rawlinson suffered some anxious moments as he was disqualified and later reinstated in his event

The Rotherham-born runner won his heat in convincing fashion in 50.32sec but was then thrown out because his trailing leg did not clear the seventh hurdle.

But after officials reviewed the video, the decision was reversed, putting Rawlinson into Sunday's final.

In the women's 2000m steeplechase final Tara Krzywicki set a new British record as she raced home in six minutes 28.07 seconds.

Hayley Tullett booked her place in the team for Paris with a comfortable victory in the 1500m in a time of four minutes 8.12 seconds.

In the absence of Jonathan Edwards, Larry Achike of the Shaftesbury Barnet club jumped a season's best of 16.55m in the first round to win the men's triple jump.
