Danvers is targetting gold at the World Championships |
Natasha Danvers has been forced to pull out of the World Championships trials in Birmingham. The Briton tore fibres in her right foot while warming up for the 400m hurdles heats at the Alexander Stadium on Friday night.
"I felt a pain in my foot and didn't think much of it at first as I've had a similar pain before," said Danvers, third quickest in the world this year.
"I kept warming up but the pain wouldn't go away. I phoned my coach and he said maybe I should think about not running. I wanted to run and called Sally (Gunnell) but she agreed with my coach so it was 2-1 then."
However, the Briton said she remained confident of being fit in time for next month's World Championships in Paris, where she is expected to be one of Britain's leading medal hopes.
"It's better I don't run rather than risk causing more damage which would mean there was no chance of me going to Paris," she added.
"I am confident of being fit for Paris. It's not as if they've told me it'll be another four weeks before I can race or I won't be able to train."
Danvers, who has clocked three successive personal bests to move second on the British all-time lists behind Gunnell, has also withdrawn from the sprint hurdles this weekend.
But the American-based hurdler showed her determination by doing a weight-training session despite still being in pain.
"I am not going to be stopped," added Danvers. "I am highly disappointed at not competing this weekend but hopefully there will be good news when I have a scan next week.
