I wasn't surprised to see Dwain Chambers winning the 100m at Saturday's World Championships trials - but I was delighted by the manner in which he booked his ticket to Paris.
Dwain has been in good shape for more than a few weeks now and looked the man to beat in the rounds leading up to the final.
Only the headwind stopped Chambers breaking 10 seconds |
And he emphasised his current good form with what was an impressive run, particularly given the conditions. He ran 10.08 into a headwind and on a better day he knows that would have been a sub-10 seconds run.
Dwain can take a lot of confidence from that.
He is now looking every inch a World Championships medal prospect, and a gold medal prospect at that.
Darren Campbell also ran brilliantly to take second but Mark Lewis-Francis will be disappointed with third.
He is just a little bit off at the moment and is struggling to recapture the form he showed at the start of the season.
I don't know why that is but I don't think he ought to be too worried - and nor should the selectors be either.
These are the three athletes they should pick and they will all go to Paris with every chance of picking up a medal.
There weren't too many other World Championships pointers on Saturday, but the 400m heats suggested there could be a good final in prospect on Sunday.
Daniel Caines looked really comfortable and I think he will he will go on to win that final.
In the women's events, Joice Maduaka scored a good win in the 100m and I expect her to go well in the 200 also.
