Captain Reece James was not involved in Chelsea training on Monday before the Blues host Paris St-Germain in the Champions League, looking to overturn a 5-2 first-leg deficit.

James signed a new six-year deal at the club last week, with boss Liam Rosenior saying his side had "secured the best footballer in the world in his position".

The 26-year-old came through the youth system at Chelsea and made his first-team debut in September 2019.

James has started in 20 of his 27 Premier League appearances with the Blues this season and has made 225 appearances in total for the club.

But he has endured several injury-disrupted seasons, and underwent surgery in December 2023 in an attempt to fix a recurring hamstring injury.

  4. Guardiola has one selection doubt 'but the rest is clear'published at 14:44 GMT

Man City v Real Madrid (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

And finally, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on whether his side's good defensive performance against West Ham has given him a selection headache: "The selection I have already done. I know the team that is going to start tomorrow. I don't have any doubts. Well, one doubt maybe, but the rest is clear."

He did not elaborate about which player or position he had a doubt.

  5. Guardiola on his decision not to train todaypublished at 14:43 GMT

Man City v Real Madrid (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

More from Pep Guardiola on his decision not to train today: "We were in Madrid [last Wednesday], we arrived late to the hotel, we still had to sleep then come back in the morning, travel here, after which we had no training, then go to London [to play West Ham], arriving back yesterday at 2.30am.

"So today you recover, cannot do anything because the players who played are still at home and tomorrow we train."

He added: "Training will not make us better in the game against Real Madrid. Today, in the model of football, with the top teams, training doesn't much improve a lot. The players understand what they have to do because we don't have time to train.

"So I prefer today to be home and for me as well, then for tomorrow instead of arriving at 3pm or 4pm we arrive at 2pm, we move a little bit our legs on the pitch. We are going to say "listen, try to do this" then go. I did it already two or three times this season, so it is not the first time."

  6. 'Aston Villa - three goals in 12 minutes - to win the Premier League' - Guardiola's favourite comebackpublished at 14:41 GMT

Man City v Real Madrid (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was asked what was his side's favourite comeback win: "Aston Villa, last game, to win the Premier League - 74 minutes 0-2 and we make three goals in 12 minutes. In other comebacks we did incredible things in scoring goals, but we concede, in goal difference we were out because of many details. So for many reasons, some times you are out.

"It will have to be the perfect game in many, many departments. From our people, from the referee's decisions. Many, many have to be good to make these kinds of things.

"It's still a nice experience to live again [even if you lose]. Always I have good memories in the defeats. One of the most exciting moments was the Tottenham game, we we went out, but what a game, what a moment."

  7. 'You never know'published at 14:38 GMT

Man City v Real Madrid (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola cited the 2022-23 Champions League semi-final, when his side claimed a 4-0 win at home to Real Madrid progress, after being asked whether his side can score four goals to complete an unlikely comeback: "The problem is not about whether we are able to do it [score goals]. We are able to create chances here. We are able to be there many, many times."

He added: "It is easy for me to say 'guys, in the first 20 minutes we need to score three goals'. Yeah, perfect. But the reality is completely different - to be sustainable in our approach, in all departments that we are working. I will talk tomorrow about what we have to do until the end. If we are not able it is because the result in the first leg was not the best one.

"The opponent is really good. We have to live with that. Of course, we have to take more risks to try. Even if the result is not that good in the first half, we have to keep going because you never know."
