Shane McLoughlin's goal was his first for Cambridge United

Cambridge extended their unbeaten league run to nine games with a 1-0 victory at promotion rivals Chesterfield.

Shane McLoughlin's goal just before the interval gave the visitors a win which saw them draw level with their opponents and ended Chesterfield's three-match winning run.

Cambridge rode their luck at times before scoring.

In-form Chesterfield striker Lee Bonis caused panic in the opposition defence with James Gibbons forced to make a vital clearance as the ball headed towards goal.

A Dylan Duffy corner then led to a goalmouth scramble, with Bonis hitting the crossbar from close range.

Another big chance for the hosts came when Jamie Grimes headed over from just a few yards.

The only goal came a minute before the break when James Brophy caught Chesterfield on the break and slipped a great ball to McLoughlin whose deft chip beat goalkeeper Zach Hemming.

Chesterfield never seriously threatened to draw level, with substitute Will Grigg glancing a header wide and Kyle McFadzean firing over with a dipping shot.
