Courtney Baker-Richardson scored his fourth league goal of the season to open the scoring for Newport County

Christian Fuchs earned the first win of his Newport tenure as his side beat Crewe Alexandra 2-0 at Rodney Parade.

Goals from Courtney Baker-Richardson and Sammy Braybrooke gave County their first league win in two months and moved them off the bottom of League Two.

The hosts came under early pressure from their northern visitors with James Connolly and Max Sanders coming close for Crewe within the first half hour.

After soaking up some early pressure Newport took the lead in the 28th minute through Courtney Baker-Richardson.

County's striker rose highest to meet Braybrooke's corner and despite the initial save from Crewe goalkeeper Sam Waller, he could not stop the 30-year-old's follow-up attempt.

Newport went into the break ahead and 45 minutes away from giving the 3,925 at Rodney Parade something to cheer about for the first time in months.

The home side started the second half the better team and a lively Bobby Kamwa looked to capitalise on County's momentum in the 65th minute after beating his man but fired wide.

Leicester City loanee Braybrooke - a shining light out of a dull Newport side in recent weeks - secured the first win of Fuchs' campaign in the 76th minute.

The 21-year-old hit the back of the net with a thunderous strike from outside the box to ensure a first home win in 289 days for the Exiles.

Newport's win combined with Harrogate Town's 1-0 loss to Accrington Stanley means the Welsh side overtake their relegation rivals and close in on 22nd placed Bristol Rovers, who are one point ahead.

Fuchs will be hoping his first win is a sign of things to come after saying goodbye to 2025 in style.
