Brentford manager Keith Andrews speaking to Sky Sports on what he discussed with the referees after the final whistle: "The challenge on [Igor] Thiago from [Cristian] Romero, to go and discuss it really.

"I consistently say about the officials having a really, really difficult job. I'm respectful of their role and I think it's just healthy to communicate what they think it was at the time. They clearly felt it wasn't at their time, VAR decided it wasn't enough to overturn and obviously I disagree."

  6. 'We want to play better and we want to create more'published at 22:50 GMT 1 January

    FT: Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, speaking to Sky Sports: "Two ways, tight even game. We know how good Brentford have been here at home.

"Defended excellently, a fantastic clean sheet mentality, that was the positive thing. The negative is we want to play better and we want to create more.

"The amount of unforced errors was too big."

On transfer window: "We are definitely out there doing everything we can to see how we can improve the squad."

Another dour Spurs game, but a clean sheet is commendable. Frank needs to find some attacking fluidity or the chants will get worse. Definitely needs more time and two transfer windows.

  8. 'We made their life hard today'published at 22:47 GMT 1 January

    FT: Sunderland 0-0 Man City

    Sunderland

Sunderland head coach Regis Le BrisImage source, Getty Images

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris speaking to Sky Sports: "Yeah, I'm enjoying [it]. I think we showed strong character against probably one of the best teams in Europe at the minute. It was important to defend well. I think we were bold because we tried to be aggressive and high up the pitch. I think we disturbed their routine, maybe their flow and it was really important. We created a few chances as well, so it was a good game. We were a bit lucky sometimes because they have so many threats and they know how to many the ball in the final third and they are really good for that, so it's a good point.

"It's so important in football to play two halves otherwise you can be happy after the first, and you know you have to go all the way. The scenario can change in just one moment. This team showed from the beginning of the season strong character and they can play good football, and 30 minutes later they know how to defend together, how to suffer together, and they have many faces, and I think it's important for us.

"I think we made their life harder today to conclude, to cross, to shoot, and it was great.

"Sometimes we don't know that we can be so good. I think it's important to repeat these kinds of performances because it shows that we need to believe in our way of playing in our strength as well. Sometimes, when you are new in a league like the Premier League, you can say it would be too hard but with confidence, with strength, with belief, I think we can go further."

  9. 'There is probably something close' - Frankpublished at 22:45 GMT 1 January

    FT: Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Thomas Frank on Brennan Johnson possibly joining Crystal Palace, speaking to Sky Sports: "Obviously, there is probably something close, but that is it."

  11. 'We don't create enough'published at 22:43 GMT 1 January

    FT: Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank speaking to BBC MOTD: "It was very nice and very special in many, many ways. Very happy with that. It was nice to be back and nice to acknowledge things both ways and then the whistle goes and it's business and you want to win the game.

On not creating as many chances as he would have liked: "Definitely, we don't create enough. I think we dealt with half of the challenge here because they are very strong at home. They only gave seven shots away in the whole game so very happy with that but we didn't create enough. The amount of unforced errors today was too big."

On Romero's tackle on Thiago: "I think there was that which was a 50/50 with Cristian Romero on Thiago and then there was the 50/50 penalty on Archie Gray. I think if that was given, it would not be overturned."

On Tottenham's away form being better than their home form: "We understand the different and difficult opponent away from home and it is linked to the amount of chances we can create and will create and we need to continually work on that."

  12. 'We are not happy'published at 22:40 GMT 1 January

    FT: Sunderland 0-0 Man City

    Manchester City

Man City midfielder Bernardo Silva, speaking to Sky Sports: "Two different halves. In the first half we didn't play that well. We didn't control the counter as well as we should.

"We attacked a bit too quick - we didn't move them to find spaces. Second half we had a lot more chances and today was one of those days we couldn't finish them. We are not happy because we wanted better than this."

  13. Romero's tackle on Thiago 'a blatant red card'published at 22:38 GMT 1 January

    FT: Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

    Brentford

More from Brentford manager Keith Andrews speaking to BBC MOTD on Cristian Romero's challenge on Igor Thiago: "Two games in a row he has been very fortunate not to get red cards for tackles on Thiago.

"I don't think it's an easy one for the officials, I thought the one in the home game was a very easy one and I am always very respectful of the individuals and understanding of the job that they have to do but I thought he was really fortunate.

"I thought the irony of us getting checked for a penalty and there was nothing around the challenge on Thiago which, having watched it back, was a blatant red card for me so I would have been pretty aggrieved if they had gone up the other end and gone the other way.

"It is difficult for the officials. I think we are a very honest team in how we play the game. I don't want our teams looking for silly or cheap fouls, I want us to be a team that puts it on the opposition and plays the game in the right way. Our players won't fall to the ground. Unfortunately Thiago was stopped from getting to the ball."

  14. 'I thought we edged it tonight'published at 22:36 GMT 1 January

    FT: Brentford 0-0 Tottenham

    Brentford

Brentford manager Keith Andrews speaking to BBC MOTD: "Lovely to see Thomas [Frank], as always. [He's] somebody who I respect hugely. I enjoyed working with him last season. Tonight I thought we edged it and if anybody was going to win the game it was probably us."

On Brentford's missed chances: "They beat us twice last season, they deserved to beat us 26 days ago at Spurs. Today was a completely different performance. We wanted it quick in the tempo in the second half and they tried to slow it down.

"Thomas is very aware of what this home crowd can do and how dangerous we can be. Their goalkeeper got booked for time wasting which pretty much says it all."

  15. 'Players are still ambitious'published at 22:33 GMT 1 January

    FT: Sunderland 0-0 Man City

    Sunderland

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris speaking to BBC MOTD: "It was a good game. Against a really strong opponent, one of the best in Europe. Important to defend properly. We showed we can defend high, when they came a bit higher with their quality we had to manage the ball in the final third. They created many chances but the character was good. Even when we were on the edge we had one foot, one head, something to protect the ball.

"It was important to escape their counter press, they were excellent a few weeks ago at the Etihad and it was impossible to escape their counter press. We did well with that today. We are growing and learning from different experiences.

"It's a question of experience, the standards in our team are high. They want to get better. If you stay at the same level, the league is going so fast that you'll be finished. They are still ambitious."

On the crowd: "Really important, especially in defensive moments. They push us, it's important for our game."

On staying calm on touchline: "Maybe not inside! Emotions are high on the pitch, maybe you need someone to be calm and if I can stay connected with the reality of the game it's better."

  16. 'We were excellent in the second half'published at 22:32 GMT 1 January

    FT: Sunderland 0-0 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports on what he made of the game: "Good. Take the point. Second half was excellent. We missed. We could not score in the six-yard box.

"How many times we were in the six-yard box against the keeper or the other one and could not convert. Of course, the threat they have, they are really good. Really pleased with the performances, especially in the second half.

"We create a lot against that team in this stadium, especially in the second half. The first half, we struggled simply because we struggled against their pressing but Rodri gave us the second pass, to break the lines, and we could run. Second half was much better.

"They are so physical. They're so strong, so it's not a surprise at that. We take the point. [It's] a long way.

"The result is always what it is."

  19. 'We had a different game plan to Etihad loss'published at 22:25 GMT 1 January

    FT: Sunderland 0-0 Man City

    Sunderland

Sunderland defender Trai Hume, speaking to Sky Sports: "We wanted to be bold. When we went to their place, we went there with a bit of naivety and a bit of respect, which they totally deserve but coming here was a different game plan. We wanted to get after them and press and I think we did that. At times we won the ball back we created chances ourselves. I think it was a good game overall.

"I think every time we play at our home, the fans are incredible. They're our 12th man, and I think you can see that from our performances and how our home record is this season. They always push us. We make it tough for opposition teams coming here, so we need to keep it that way."

On ambitions this season: "We don't look too far ahead. We take it game by game. I think we've done that since the start of the season, and it's worked well for us so far, so we just take it game by game and we see where the season takes us."

A very high-intensity game between Sunderland and Man City that could well decide who takes the trophy home come the end of the season. Both teams put up a fight, but the universe gave them a point apiece.
