Yorkshire are in sight of an unlikely victory after Glamorgan’s generous declaration invited them to score 295 in 68 overs at 4.34 runs an over, which has become 170 off 34.

The experienced pair of Adam Lyth (77 not out) and new recruit Sam Whiteman are looking confident on a pitch which is occasionally keeping low.

The decision to close Glamorgan’s second innings six minutes before the scheduled lunch break surprised most observers, and Finlay Bean showed Yorkshire intentions when he took 10 off the first two balls from first-innings hero Mason Crane.

Bean went lbw to Crane for 23 after a stand of 67 with Lyth, but Glamorgan could not make further inroads before tea.

For the first time in the match, temperatures are giving spectators a pleasant experience rather than one to endure.

Surrey's batters have dominated in the sunshine on the final day at Edgbaston. Chris Woakes and Ethan Bamber may consider themselves unfortunate not to have taken wickets in the first hour of the day but since then there has been little to get the fielding team excited.

Jamie Smith and Dan Lawrence both reached three figures before being caught in the deep off Rob Yates for 132. Lawrence is still there on 130.
