How's the day gone for you today? It's been a great day, been a lot of fun.
What've you been doing? I've been trying to roll back the years and pretend that my body's like, 20 years younger than it actually is
Is it? Nah
but, for a brief moment it felt like it.
What hurts the most? Difficult really picking out which part of my body feels the most pain.
But you'll be alright in the morning? I'll be alright in about a week.
You were judging today, weren't you? Yeah, we were judging - it was kind of like an open jam format. I mean, there were so many different types of skateboarding going on vert ramp that it's impossible to have a standard kind of
it was just a lot of fun, you know? It was good.
Do you think comps work out a lot better when they're run like a jam? Yeah, I think that that's what skateboarding's all about really, innit? I mean, you get some serious-type comps, but that today was just about having fun. First gathering for a long time as well for vert skaters. There were a lot of people turning up, which was good.
What tricks and things were you most psyched about seeing? I liked Stu Graham, I liked Stu's entire act to be honest - he's a burly but stylish skater, and he busts out some ridiculous moves. Colin Taylor - his airs. I love the way he just scoops them and grabs them. Dave Allen from St Albans - he just, he
I've known him for years man, and he's always just busted out big stuff.
Young Ricky rocking the old school thing? Yeah! Exactly - Ricky skates from like 1984, or something, but really good 1984, you know? And it's just so good [laughs]!
Were there winners, or did everyone who rode well get a prize? Well, we'd sorted out a bunch of prizes for people, but in the end we just decided that it was a lucky dip. We put all the prizes in a box, and as the skaters went by the ladder, they could just grab a bag and that's what happened. So some people got good stuff, and some people got a belt, or whatever.
It was a bit unfortunate that there was an indoor comp on the hottest, nicest day of the year. Yeah, but if it'd been an outdoor comp, it would have been pi**ing with rain, so
Are you going to do another one of these then? Yeah, I think so. I mean, judging by the kind of response and once these boys start telling all of the others, and there're a few injuries kicking about, so some boys didn't turn up, some boys didn't hear about it. So who knows - maybe next year we'll do it again and there'll be more people.
It was nice having just a vert comp - a bit different to your normal skate comp. Well yeah, I mean, vert comps are much different these days, rather than a sort of street kick-around that we also have here as well. But the ramp was there and it's probably been about 12 years or 14 years since there was last a vert comp in Scotland, and it was just really good.
Cheers, Jamie
