Life goes on!

Well the first week of 2007 is nearly over; the christmas decorations have come down, everyone has finally stopped wishing each other a Happy New Year, and the buses are back to normal ( although the same can't be said for the ferries!!)

We don't get much in the way of New Year Sales in the shops as we don't have many High Street names here only Woolies and Superdrug; so they know they've got a captive audience when it comes to people buying stuff. Besides most of the stuff was discounted before Xmas as poor sales seemed to affect the whole country!

Quite a few of the smaller, independent shops close for a few weeks during January or February as there are very few tourists here to make it worth their while being open. They seem to forget that some people live here all year round!!

I hope that some of you saw the recent BBC2 programme "Castle In The Country" about Bute and may consider coming up here sometime (I'd make it the Summer if I was you!!) We'd love to see you!

Happy New Year!!

When I see a name 'like nutty as a fruit cake I expect some lunatic content as would be expected of a blog from Harris. All this sane talk of Superdrug, Woolies and the tourist trade is fine but it doesn't make you a 'roof job'. More signs of madness please or change your name by deedpole to Captain Sensible, Baldric the Sane or Normanna the Normal

My dear chap, some of us keep our lunacy under control and only allow it to surface at the appropriate time!! It helps to keep everyone on their toes as they never know what to expect!!!

It has been a trifle disappointing so far. Not one jot, tittle or iota of nuttiness and no discernible fruitcake. But I like the ever-present sense of anticipation.

Stop touting for business on this blog, that's my job, a note to all tourists Come to Lewis& Harris far better than Paris. We've got more touristy shops in the Western Isles than all the other islands put together, and we'll open any shop, but not on the Sabbath, Good God Fearing Folks in the Western Isles. The Americans should fall for that one, what say you jmc, mjc, cmj, initials always get me.

The Lofty Peak (Flour of Scotland) recipe book doesn't always list nuts as an ingredient for fruit cake so nutty-as-a-fruitcake seems to be well withn the Trades Description Act in using this name - whatever the nut content. That said, all blogs seem to come into contact with nuts at some time during the production process so a health warning is useful.

Whitesettler's lost his brackets! Is it a New Year Resolution? It's a worry. Much better shops in Orkney than anywhere in the West and, in summer, some of them are even open.

and some of them are even open .........ON A SUNDAY.

ON A SUNDAY FC? Tut, tut, tut, some people will stoop to any stoopiness to blag a tourist from the Western Isles. There's always nuts in IB, so IBHQ said!!

Someone should tell poor Donald, I hear he lost his.

Do fruitcakes on the islands have nuts? Straightforward question there, folks! # the whitesettler: with shops closed, Americans would be lost in the western isles on the sabbath - after all, we get our praying done in the morning, followed by a lunch in a family restaurant (the all you can eat buffets are a specialty of the country), and then we go to where we can say "charge it!" This is known as profligacy - as even non-Calvinists would tell you.# As to your being confused by initials: would it help if I were to used HRH instead (eh?!).

Closed on Sundays? I was in Stornoway this week and most of it seemed to close on Wednesday as well. An Lantair was good though.
