Happy Hogmany/New Year!!

Well, 2006 nears its end and its certainly going out with a bang!
The weather here on Bute is awful and not looking like getting much better for a few days so I guess 2007 will start as 2006 left off!!
Needless to say, the ferries are off , so yesterday the shelves in the supermarket were virtually empty not long after the shop opened. You'd think people were stocking up for spending a month in isolation!!
I don't know how the other islands cope, but I've got a theory that the people here don't really see this place as an island. Because its so close to the mainland and you can see it clearly every day, I think a lot of folk panic when the ferries stop!
Me, I love it! The idea that the outside world stops at Wemyss Bay and we can just get on with our lives over here at our own pace.
Whatever you do tonight and whoever you spend it with, Have a happy hogmany and here's to a peaceful and prosperous 2007.

Friend tells me Tob fireworks were great, despite winds damaging the roof! Hope the influx of my fellow English visitors wasn't too awful. Last time I came up for Hogmanay, didn't know many and they were awful rude and unpleasant. and I was ashamed by their behaviour - on the worst Balamory levels. My friend introduced me to a different side of Mull and all I can say is that you are so,so lucky. Not just because of your scenery and wildlife but because you still have caring communities by nature, not organised/dutiful.

I couldn't agree more. When I came down to live on Bute in 2005 I had only experienced summer sailings and especially since the crossing at the Kyles is only five minutes long I had never thought of Bute as a "real" island. This year has seen me leaving Wemyss Bay and ending up back there, stranded on the island and off it and finding mail, newspapers and fresh fruit and vegetables delayed by the weather. I love it.
