 |  | |  | | | | | | | In 1567 Mary married the Earl of Bothwell - the man generally believed to be the murderer of Lord Darnley.
Outraged by the marriage, and jealous of Bothwell's power and influence, other Scottish nobles rebelled against the Queen and her new husband. Civil war followed.
| After defeat at the Battle of Carberry Hill, Mary was taken prisoner. She was forced to resign her crown in favour of her infant son, James. The rebel nobles planned to rule Scotland until James was old enough to take charge himself.
Amazingly, Mary managed to escape. She raised an army but at Langside, Glasgow, she was, again, defeated.
With no more moves to make in Scotland, Mary crossed the border into England to seek help from her cousin, Elizabeth I, Queen of England. She never saw Scotland again.
