In 1543 Mary became the infant Queen of Scotland. With Scotland caught in the middle of a deadly struggle between mortal enemies, England and France, Mary was sent to the safety of the French court.
Mary returned to Scotland promising much. However, her brief reign resulted only in disastrous marriages, murder and war.
With Scotland in a state of rebellion and chaos, Mary fled to England to seek help from her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England. She soon realised she was an unwelcome guest.
