Raymond Baxter
A former spitfire pilot in the Second World War, Raymond Baxter became the BBC’s motoring correspondent in 1950.
He covered all aspects of driving, from the World Championship, to the state of the country’s roads. Charming, witty and incredibly knowledgeable, he became one of the BBC’s favourite characters, frequently testing things out for himself, driving cars and flying planes.

He was an accomplished rally driver, competing in the Monte Carlo rally 12 times and reporting his adventures back to race fans in Britain. Raymond Baxter went on to become the first presenter of Tomorrow’s World.
