Jackie Stewart

Three times World Champion, Jackie Stewart has won the Drivers Championship more times than any other Brit.

A contemporary of Jim Clark and Graham Hill, Stewart was part of a golden generation of British drivers that dominated the Championship for over a decade.

He won his first title in 1969 and followed this up with two more in 1971 and 1973. He dramatically retired after 99 Grand Prix races in 1973, following the death of his team-mate Francois Cevert during practice for the US Grand Prix.

Stewart became a leading advocate for greater protection for drivers competing in Formula One after witnessing so many deaths on the track. As well as a great motor racing champion, Stewart is credited with helping improve the sport's safety record.
