A staggering 17 million people watched wide-eyed as Judy Murray’s youngest son, Andy Murray, beat Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon in 2013. This made Andy the first Brit to win the men’s title in 77 years, and didn’t we all go wild?!
I think that Jamie and Andy will be nervous in a ‘Don’t you dare embarrass us’ kind of way!Judy Murray
It was Judy that inspired her sons, Andy and Jamie, to start playing tennis at a young age, and now that they’re Britain’s top players, Coach Judy’s now trading her racket for the Rumba to see if she can spin her body as well as her tennis balls! But will her moves be ace or go overhead?
Judy was born in Bridge of Allan, Scotland, into a sporting family. Her father Roy played for Stirling Albion football club, and Judy was always an eager tennis player – with no indoor tennis courts in her area growing up though, Judy played tennis in the summer and badminton in the winter. Despite excelling in tennis and winning 64 tennis titles in Scotland during her career, Judy chose to further her education over competing internationally, and went on to study French and Business at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1981.
At the age of 19, Judy trained as a tennis coach - something she’d become grateful for in 1994, after she became a full-time coach and initial trainer for her sons Andy and Jamie. In 2011, she went on to become captain of the British Fed Cup team (the premier international team competition in women’s tennis).
Two years ago, Judy created Set4Sport: an initiative to get families more active. Inspired by her own family – the scheme is all about playing games and having fun in a family environment, using everyday household objects as equipment.
Judy is a massive Strictly fan. But will she commit foot faults on the dance floor or manage to land a Ballroom Grand Slam? We think the Murray family have room for at least one more champion!
