A mini-stroke (also known as TIA or transient ischaemic attack) is the same as a stroke, except that the symptoms last for a short amount of time and no longer than 24 hours.

The FAST test can help identify the signs of a mini-stroke:

  • FACIAL weakness: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
  • ARM weakness: Can the person raise both arms?
  • SPEECH problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
  • TIME to call 999

If you, or someone else, show any of the signs of stroke you must call 999. There is no way of knowing whether you are having a mini-stroke or a stroke when the symptoms first start, so you need to seek immediate medical help.

If you think you have had mini-stroke and have not sought medical attention, see your GP urgently.
