As a student "When did you last get drunk?" shouldnt be a question that leaves you thinking for long, (unless of course you never drink and in that case the answer would be obvious). However I got a nasty shock when I realised the answer was ummmm I cant remember. It finally brought home the fact that the for the past few weeks I have spent most nights in my room trying to wade through the reading that I didnt have time to do during the days where I spent most of my time at work. A fact which has prompted several people to ask me Why are you at university to get a degree or to do your supposedly part time job? Actually I have to admit after one week where I worked 26 and a1/2 hours I began to wonder! I know there are loads of other students slaving away both night and day at jobs to keep themselves at Uni and I admire them. But in this case Ive reached burn out point. Perhaps if I hadnt volunteered for so many things this term
Attendance at Spanish lessons has been poor recently
On the other hand the YSIS placement has been really rewarding, seeing children getting immense satisfaction out of grasping difficult facts especially the ones who find it so much harder and tell me Im not very clever you know. Lame as this is going to sound the breaking point for me was the cute slogan badge I was given. A sweet gesture and much appreciated but when the phrase bookworm sums you up, you know youve been spending way too much time on the wrong side of your bedroom door. Yes, I came to university to get a degree but not just that, a little part of me did hope to make new friends and perhaps have a social life. So from this point on Im going to try to achieve some kind of balance whereby I find the courage to tell my manager Im not going to work more than 15hrs a week and I spend at least one night a week socialising! On the more serious side Im lucky that Im still in the first year and have end of term exams in which to recover from the Poor essays one of which was unsurprisingly handed in late. I dont want to spend the rest of my life working in retail or every evening locked in my room reading about Satans Flunkies (bear in mind thats a highlight from the reading material). More importantly I do want to be able to remember the last time I got drunk
