Okay so here I am, third week and unlike one girl on my corridor still here. The people are great, the campus is ummm
picturesque in places and I survived the visit from the parents - even gained some Bettys cakes as a result! Just a few tiny problems, (aside from the eternal debate over the true meaning of the word supper). Well naturally, every student needs something to moan about. Is it the 2,000 word essay I had to write this weekend? Well it is partly that of course, who thought an arts degree would involve work? Certainly not me! Is it the fact that I have already embarrassed myself in front of many of the members of the music related society Ive recently joined? A little why do those awful moments replay so many times in your head? My frequent mutterings of oh god why?! did eventually attract some scared attention from the people on my corridor. Maybe its the Course? No, not exactly the lectures arent conducted in the huge sloping rooms of my nightmares, and as yet (though its only a matter of time) my mobile phone hasnt gone off. Okay enough skirting the issue, its the seminars, those friendly gatherings, where youre not supposed to feel intimidated in fact youre supposed to make friends. Dont misunderstand me, my group is friendly and Ive yet to encounter death stares across the room. However its one of the most intimidating environments that Ive ever experienced! Eleven other people, plus an eccentric and highly intelligent tutor discussing things at a level Ive never even dreamed of reaching. Good bye A2 level were on to the hard stuff now! I know you shouldnt compare yourself with people who have already started the essay on the afternoon it was set, or read the bible for fun over the summer but, well, Im only human! And just occasionally the amount of information whizzing over my head gets me down. Still its time to think positive and stop wincing every time my comments are responded to with, thats an interesting interpretation but
"Ive decided Im here to add a little colour to the debate, to look at things from an alternative point of view. So I cant use the complicated terminology but I can encourage them to consider the potential similarities between swans taking flight and a squadron of aeroplanes
at least I think thats what the poet was getting at! Veronica Could you be a student diarist?
