SPRINGWATCH POETRY COMPETITION

Second Place

After Dark…

by Amy O’Hara

When it’s bright, during the day,
It’s just the boring place where you play.
With the broken swing and the old oak tree,
And the buzzing of those pesky bees!
It’s just your messy, dirty park,
But do you know what happens after dark?
Well, the old, gnarled oak tree opens his eyes,
And he shakes his branch where the ladybug lies.
The ladybug yawns and gives the sign,
To make the wind blow and the stars to shine.
The stars start to twinkle and the wind blows his breeze,
Blowing all the pollen to make the moon sneeze!

The moon wakens up and gives a wink to the stream,
And then he wakens up the leaves with his bright beam.
The leaves start to whisper, and laugh, and giggle,
And they jump about to make the daisies wiggle!
They get very grumpy, those little daisies,
They won’t wake up they’re far too lazy!
Then the old oak tree called Father Nature,
Quietens them all to give them a lecture.
About how they’ve been ruined because of pollution,
And if only those humans could see the solution,
They could do something different like turn off a light,
They could just save some energy; it’s what nature would like!
